Capitalism, the Face of Space?

Remember when the shuttle program was axed last year?  Conservatives and scientists throughout America, short of performing harakiri in abject dishonor, lamented President Barack Obama’s decision to cut NASA’s prized program.

Conservatives were quick to use the opportunity to berate Obama over another policy failure surely responsible for ending American primacy in space and abandoning the final frontier to China and Russia.  Scientists likewise bemoaned the cut in funds for “crucial” scientific research claiming it would forestall our technological progress.


The knee jerk reaction is understandable, mankind’s fascination with space is insatiable, if not, our addiction to a constellation of artificial satellites surely is.  But that is the point, our need to maintain and grow this celestial infrastructure alone should drive markets to fill the void where cosmic bureaucrats formerly held sway.  The idea that without Big Science, and the largesse of the U.S. government, technological progress would halt in America and left to be dictated solely by others is without merit.

On Friday, after a privately owned company linked up with the International Space Station, Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step onto the moon, seemed to agree.  “Nearly 43 years after we first walked on the moon, we have taken another step in demonstrating continued American leadership in space.”


What for a moment seemed embarrassing, even abhorrent – to ask Russia for a lift into space – has given way to a realization Barack Obama’s single random act of cost cutting may have earned him a very special accolade.  Much to the chagrin of conservatives and alarmists Obama may soon be regarded as harbinger of capitalism in space.

By providing the initial thrust, namely the demand for private rockets and shuttles, for a fledgling commercial space industry to supply (not to mention a home for unemployed rocket scientists) Obama has in his absence accomplished what he never could have dreamed in all his meddlesome machinations.

On Friday a private company, Space X, headed by a real life Tony Stark a.k.a. Elon Musk officially abolished the nearly 50 year government monopoly in space.  Musk, the man who helped bring about the world’s largest Internet payment system, Pay Pal, and the unbelievably fast all electric Tesla Roadster on Friday made a quantum leap in commercializing space.

By using his own privately designed rocket, the Falcon 9, to propel the Dragon spacecraft to that DMV in the sky known as the International Space Station Musk has been passed a baton formerly reserved for a small elite band of government agencies and has taken Space X boldly where no private company has gone before.  Albeit NASA contributed $381 million in seed money – fancying themselves venture capitalists – much of the blood and sweat is due to this entrepreneurial magnate.
Elon Musk almost lost his shirt investing much of his own money while building Tesla Motors from the ground up, but he ultimately prevailed as the Tesla sedan proves electric cars are viable and don’t have to look like a bug on acid.

Speaking of magnates Richard Branson is well on his way to making low Earth orbit a hot spot for celebrities and those with cash to blow.  His Virgin Galactic enterprise has already built the world’s first Spaceport in New Mexico and his passenger manifests read like the headlines at TMZ.  He plans to have space tourists enjoying a float about very soon.

In an elite cocktail of capitalism Google’s Eric Schmidt, Ross Perot and James Cameron (no doubt bored of travelling deeper in Earth’s oceans than any other human) have teamed up for a new cosmic voyage and no its not a movie, much more blue collar – asteroid mining.  According to the company, Planetary Resources:
“…near-term goals are to dramatically reduce the cost of asteroid exploration. We will combine the best practices of commercial aerospace innovation, operational adaptability, and rapid manufacturing to create robotic explorers that cost an order of magnitude less than current systems.
We will control costs by constraining scope and creating simple designs that can be executed by a small, expert team. And although we will hold ourselves to the highest standards and practices, we will aggressively accept mission risk where appropriate.
Our philosophy will allow rapid development of private, commercial interplanetary space exploration. In light of fiscal challenges facing the spaceflight community, innovation in cost and market is as valuable as innovation in capability.”
Yikes!  “Aggressively accept mission risk” and “innovation in cost and market” utterances we rarely ever heard from NASA.  These intergalactic miners aren’t the only ones seeking new energy stores in space.  Companies like Shackelton Energy are chomping at the bit for an opportunity to scoop up helium-3 and plutonium-238 which should be able to power everything from space stations to lunar rovers.

Don’t feel like hauling space luggage, floating in low Earth orbit, mining the moon or asteroids?  Robert Bigelow, founder of BudgetSuites, has a six-diamond idea that will make the Burge Dubai blush – space hotels.  He has already tested and launched experimental modules that currently remain in orbit and Elon Musk has agreed to partner with Bigelow Aerospace in order to kick off an international marketing effort for private-sector space stations.

Needless to say if we can extricate NASA and the U.S. government successfully from these processes we’ll have full fledged capitalism in space.  Until then it is unfortunately more of the same we suffer from here on Earth – crony capitalism.  Many of these cosmos bound start ups are funded by Congress through NASA and until companies like Space X, Blue Origin, Planetary Resources, Sierra Nevada Corp, etc. are able to cut the proverbial multi-million dollar umbilical cord it remains to be seen whether the market in space is ultimately worth it – at least right now.
As MSNBC’s Cosmic Log reported earlier this month:
It is highly questionable whether NASA will get as much money for commercial crew development as it has requested. The request for fiscal year 2013 was almost $830 million, but a Senate subcommittee cut that figure to $525 million. Today the House passed a bill specifying an even lower funding level, $500 million. The White House has threatened a presidential veto of that bill, in part because of its concerns about the cutback in commercial crew support.
Pegging space exploration and development to the political fate of the U.S. government is not a sustainable business model.  Our financial and real estate markets can attest to that fact.  While Newt Gingrich was right, its time to shoot the Moon we don’t want the government involved again, politicians all too often will use it as a political football.  If Space X and Elon Musk want to dine on Mars in their very own Martian Space colony they’re going to have to figure out how to do it on their own.

Until then, we’ll still be rooting for the private space race to begin:

Newt is Right, Time to Shoot The Moon!


 
            Newt Gingrich’s bold new idea, recently revealed at a stump speech in Florida, of seeding the Moon with American astro-colonists is actually not all that crazy.  What is crazy is asking taxpayers to continue to spearhead space exploration for another 53 years; on this point he is as usual – wrong.



In last night’s Jacksonville debate, former Governor Mitt Romney seemed to agree, I know Ron Paul does.  Romney, however, merely saw a golden opportunity to mock Newt for his outlandish idea and to weigh in on it as a former businessman:



“If I had a business executive come to me and say I want to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I’d say: ‘You’re fired!’” Romney boasted.



Only one problem, there are a lot of businessmen whom disagree with the former Bain Capital CEO.  Evidently Romney doesn’t know mitt about interstellar business.



Sir Walter Branson founder of Virgin galactic has kind of a knack for creating value and he sees a lot of it in space.  For example, Branson just completed the world’s first international spaceport in New Mexico and will soon shuttle wealthy space enthusiasts into low earth orbit. 



Virgin Galactic isn’t the only celestial startup, Bigelow Aerospace of North Las Vegas, Nevada aims to create orbiting luxury hotels and SpaceX has developed one of the first operational private space capsules called the Dragon.  For a surprising list of private space companies and their ideas for the future look, here.



            Newt’s reason for bringing up a moon base makes a lot of sense.  Evidently Florida’s Space Coast, a community heavily reliant on high tech spending, is hurting more than the rest of the country, treading water at 12% unemployment.  While I’m not necessarily a fan of some of Planet Newt’s ideas namely his love affair with geoengineering, what he refers to as “cheap” market-based approaches to anthropogenic climate change, he might be getting warm on this one.



            It is time to emancipate the U.S. from the U.N. “Space Treaty” we signed in 1967 in the midst of the Cold War and explore the final frontier!  Why can’t start colonizing the moon under a “northwest ordinance” and reignite the idea of manifest destiny?  Why can’t the moon be our 51st state?  Are we to extend the same concept to the entire cosmos?  Do we have to become One World before we step off this rock?  If we wait there is a lot to lose.



            Gingrich wrote a pretty straightforward book a few years back: Drill Here, Drill Now.  In that vein Newt is for once consistent, a Moon base would be a colossal job creator.  NASA, however, probably shouldn’t build it even though they’re in talks with Russia for a joint venture to do so.  If Florida’s Space Coast want’s jobs they’ll find it in companies like Shackelton Energy Co. which seeks to extricate fuels like plutonium-238 and helium-3 by transforming the moon into a interstellar gas station.  Gingrich should write another book after he loses the election: Drill There, Drill Soon.



            Barack Obama deserves some kudos too.  Although Obama receives his due ration of ridicule I would like to thank him for ending the space shuttle program as it was because he highlighted for Americans the fact we don’t need government to be inventive, curious, or passionate when it comes to space travel.  When everyone was afraid we’d be hitch hiking on Russian and Chinese ships I said Goodbye NASA, Hello Space Age.  Finally the monkey is off our back.  Private companies might not be in it “For the Benefit of All” as goes the NASA motto, but their work will benefit all.

Goodbye NASA, Hello Space Age! To Infinity and Beyond!

The National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) has a very special place in the hearts of many Americans, but its time has ended.  Granted, the end of the space shuttle program is by no means the end of NASA itself, like all government agencies it will find a way to persist regardless of deep budget cuts.  From Apollo 11 to the disasters of Challenger and Columbia NASA has had its ups and downs as will the future of private space exploration, however, unlike under NASA the burden of finance, risk and reward will no longer rest so heavily on the shoulders of the American taxpayer.


NASA by any argument enjoyed its fiscal zenith in 1965 (4.4% of federal budget) during the Space Race between the US and the former Soviet Union.  Amidst the Cold War the two superpowers were in a literal boat race for years until Neil Armstrong in the summer of 1969 set foot on the moon famously proclaiming the feat as: "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."  NASA at this time was useful above all for one reason, its ability to demonstrate American political, economic, technological, and ideological superiority.


After the stellar success of Apollo 11 and the corresponding prestige it bestowed on America, NASA was relegated to the very unsexy task of hauling space antennas and assembling the constellation of satellites necessary to power our modern economy.  Recently, instead of an elite cadre of space exploring super scientists NASA has been used as a political football as much as ever and has been referred to as a "$18.9 billion self-esteem program" for its awkward foray into scientific ambassadorship rather than serious space travel.  


It has taken decades for the NASA model and the legion of scientists and private contractors it supports to come to grips with the inevitable walk into obsolescense.  NASA may maintain its mission statement to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research", but these are responsibilities which have traditionally found more fruition in the private sector.


While there are compelling arguments to keep NASA as the tip of the spear a la Christopher Columbus who "discovered" the new world for Europe on Queen Isabella's dime, others point to the example set by British and Dutch joint-stock companies of the early 17th century which succeeded in actual colonization and famously advancing commercial interests.  These early models of the modern corporation upon hearing of potential riches in the New World garnered the support of many private citizens through the selling of stock on the promise of potentially large dividends versus merely relying on the fickle largesse of kings and queens.


Today many companies are stepping up to the plate in hopes of providing private persons with the same opportunities provided by the Virginia and Plymouth Companies of the early colonial period.  Albeit, nobody is seriously considering colonizing the moon any time soon some may in the near future find themselves on our first satellite longer than the 21 hours and 31 minutes of Apollo 11.  From $200k low earth orbit adventures envisioned by Virgin Galactic and SpaceShipOne to celestial semi trucks designed by Orbital Sciences Corp. and SpaceX to service the International Space Station (ISS) near space is already if not well on its way to being domesticated.

There are companies entirely self funded by the fortunes of internet moguls to titans of hospitality as in the case of Bigelow Aerospace of North Las Vegas, Nevada.  Already tasting the success of currently orbiting modules and industry accolades this 1998 stellar startup aims to develop space habitats as well as the vehicles necessary to transport their crews and residents.  For a surprising list of private space companies just look here and see what marvels they are coming up with.


Low Earth orbit is just the beginning!  While there may be some who cover this uncertain period as the abdication of US hegemony in space or that the US will be consigned to heavenly hitchhiking relying on the Russians and Chinese I would submit we are embarking on an unbridled adventure.  For those alarmists out there still beating the benighted drum of "peak oil" and "renewable fuels" look no further than our own solar system laden with hydrocrabons and other sources of abundant fuel.

Take the moon for example, lunar strip mining may not be the stuff of science fiction much longer.  The isotope Helium-3 is an amazing substance able to aid in nuclear fusion which cleanly releases vast amounts of energy.  Helium-3 is not only abundant in the atmosphere of Jupiter, but there is purportedly millions if not hundreds of millions of tons lying on the surface of the moon and companies like Shackelton Energy Co., a subsidiary of Stone Aerospace aims at raising billions of dollars in order to extract and deliver this precious possibility to Earth.  Other fuels such as plutonium-238 while rare on earth are also abundant on the moon and will be able to power everything from space stations to lunar rovers.


According to Jill Stuart, fellow in global politics of the London School of Economics' Department of Government, since 'the international community sort of insists that [space travel] be tied to a state', and given the fact that 'governments control most access to space through their ownership of most launch pads' the US government will continue to be able to assert a measurable authority over its citizens' access to space.  NASA therefore will no doubt be here for posterity, but it will most likely transform into something a kin to the FAA of space, a bureaucracy that will manage, certify, and license America's appetite for the cosmos.


Regardless, let the real Space Race begin!
