AMTV News: UN Arms Treaty, China Slowdown, Syrian Show of Force

Topher Morrison

This is AMTV News, I’m your host Topher Morrison.  Today is Monday July 9th 2012.

Americans Up in Arms Over UN Treaty

Meet the latest bright idea to walk out of New York, the UN’s “Small Arms Treaty.”  Flanked by humanitarian rhetoric this internationalist effort is aimed at one thing, ensure the monopoly of violence stays with the governments of the world – hardly a demographic with a respectable human rights record.

The Obama administration has thrown its full support behind the treaty and therefore to subordinate the Constitution’s 2nd Amendment guarantee and with it the police powers of the sovereign s tates:  The treaty is said to impose:

-       tougher licensing laws
-       confiscation and destruction of weapons deemed in violation
-       elimination of semi-automatics referred to prejudicially as “assault weapons”

All this backed by the same administration that signed off on the biggest weapons deal in the history of the planet to that bastion of civil rights – Saudi Arabia.  July 27th is the deadline for the treaty, any surprise it’s right before Congress’ August recess?

Would-be Terrorist Caught at Olympic Park

For months the chatter about London has been of terror plots.  To be sure, the Olympic grounds will be protected by the largest peacetime security operation ever seen  in Britain.   The heightened attention has nabbed a 24-year-old ex con rumored to have fought with Somali Al Qaeda affiliate al-Shahaab last week ending a flurry of 14 terror-related arrests across Britain – all based purely on suspicion.  In a nation fearing extremists around every corner, even within it own police ranks and boasting a camera on every lamppost expect more arrests as the opening ceremonies approach and due process is eroded.

Syria’s Show of Force

“Naval forces conducted an operational live fire excersise on Saturday.”  Launching missiles from sea and coast, helicopters and missile boats the Syrian government displayed its ability to repel foreign aggression.

Western nations have been beckoned to intervene on behalf of opposition forces who claim over 14,000 deaths since the start of the uprising, but Syria’s powerful network of allegiances stretches from Tehran to Beijing impeding political efforts at subduing Bashar al-Assad’s embattled regime and western efforts to overthrow it.  Foreign intelligence services, however, are supporting a shadowy network of insurgents steadily encroaching on Damascus threatening further escalation of violence as pro-Assad forces scramble to survive.

Chinese Demand Slows, Reflecting Global Trend

China's consumer and producer prices eased more than expected in June, inflation data on Monday showed, signaling falling demand for goods from the world's second-biggest economy.  The economy overall is seeing its slowest full year of growth since 2002 – albeit at a 9.2 percent clip.  Falling prices indicate not just declining input prices, but declining demand from foreign customers reflecting a weakening global economy.

Monsanto’s Full Court Press

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) have been linked to infertility, weight gain, organ dysfunction and the desctruction of the environment.  Nearly 20 states are considering “Right to Know” legislation, forcing producers to label food containing GMOs and prohibiting false representation as “natural” or “naturally made” from appearing on such products.   Monsanto and Dow ally StopCostlyFoodLabeling.com launched a campaign claiming malicious costs and warning of a legion of trial lawyers taking advantage of the system.  Both claims are handily debunked, Americans have the right to know what they’re eating.

Govern Locally, Not Globally

Govern Locally, Not Globally
Is this not pro Earth?
Introducing: Lexicon of a Libertarian

If you want to replace an established system, be it religious, cultural, scientific or political an equally comprehensive system must be introduced to take its place.  Specifically, the new system must solve the failures and embrace the success and often the routines of the former.

Take Christianity for example.  Within 300 years it grew from an obscure Jewish cult to a multinational religion, larger than Judaism had ever been or wished to be.  Christmas and Easter take place on the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, not of mere coincidence, but of prudence.  By superimposing Christianity over the dominant pagan religion of Rome and by respecting the same holy days it was ensured a smooth transition.

This series begins without a predetermined end, as a musing on how the Lexicon of a Libertarian might provide our current national and geopolitical model with a similar thorough transition to an emphasis on individual liberty.

When God was Killed Technocrats Just Took His Place

The video below is of Michael Shermer, founder and publisher of Skeptic Magazine.  Beginning at 13:30 (I would highly suggest watching the entire video) he provides a deft analysis of modern religion after anamism, polytheism and monotheism proved insufficient to answer and solve mankind’s problems or its propensity to create new ones.

Shermer begins with a self-reliant hominid on the plains of Africa.  According to Shermer the hominid and successive generations of humans struggling to survive and therefore operating from a position of advanced insecurity saw patterns everywhere.

The attempt to explain and predict these patterns and the world around them gave way to the idea that there was something larger than oneself.  After the epiphany, mankind established dogma and superstition to cope with what we could not immediately understand.   This is the broad stroke that seems to paint much of our existence.

According to Shermer’s dialectic, after monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) proved an illusion big government became the new world order.  The idea that “government can rescue us” is pervasive and is based on the dogmatic belief that mankind, through scientific experts, can somehow provide all the answers.

This from Friedrich Nietzche’s The Gay Science (1882):

“God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?”

Understand that there is no fundamental change in the human condition when God is killed and the mantel of science is assumed.  If the science of psychology has taught us anything it is that we are still as insecure as our hominid forebears.  Because we are insecure we look to each other, but most importantly to our state and our leaders for answers.

Since the turn of the 20th century we thought by rejecting the false gods of the supernatural realm for the real gods of secular and by embracing the redemptive qualities of democracy that people, through science and its technology, would bring us closer to utopia – a new stage in human existence, what Nietzche called the Übermensch or Superman.

The problem is that science, like democracy is essentially a utilitarian device.  While science may lead us to knowledge and democracy may safeguard internal peace and individual freedom, humans are behind both and therefore both are by no means infallible.   What happens when science or its Supermen are wrong?  I’ll put it this way; propaganda was not perfected by monarchs.

This intoxicating prospect of Übermensch wrought disastrous consequences in the 20th century.  We found democracy and authoritarianism were not mutually exclusive as the state became superior and jealous of the individuals whom had built it.  Over and over again in Nazi Germany, Stalin’s Soviet Union, Mao’s China, Imperial Japan, Communist Cambodia, Islamic Indonesia, etc. there was avalanche after avalanche of tyranny.

Government in its last analysis is force, even when ostensibly governed by science or Nietzhe’s Overmen.  The methodology of science in its purest form may in time unlock a universe of puzzles, but its Supermen cannot as Nietzche and others wished, establish a new and comprehensive hierarchy of values for mankind.  Ironically, Nietzche and his progeny never understood that man as a being of nature operates under similar laws, which cannot simply be repealed and replaced by decree.  Equally ironic was that the Crown and the Church before them had already tried and failed.

F.A. Hayek from Road to Serfdom on Hitler’s attempt:

“Where the precise effects of government policy on particular people are known, where the government aims directly at such particular effects, it cannot help knowing these efforts, and therefore it cannot be impartial.  It must, of necessity, take sides, impose valuations upon people and instead of assisting them in the advancement of their own ends, choose the ends for them.  As soon as the particular effects are foreseen at the time a law is made, it ceases to be a mere instrument to be used by the people and becomes instead an instrument used by the lawgiver upon the people and for his ends.

The state ceases to be a piece of utilitarian machinery intended to help individuals in their fullest development of their individual personality and becomes a “moral” institution – where “moral” is not used in contrast to immoral, but describes an institution which imposes on its members its views on all moral questions, whether these views be moral or highly immoral. In this sense the Nazi or any other collectivist state is “moral,” while the [classical] liberal state is not.”

“Govern Locally, Not Globally” – An Emphasis on You

While Shermer claims “the idea that government can rescue us is no longer the wave of the future” current trends do not favor this sentiment.  Big government has never been bigger and its technocrats have already overrun the planet, look no further than the European Union, the U.S., China, the African Union and ultimately the United Nations.  Only a few free and prosperous citadels remain.  The rest are struggling to tread water amidst a sea of debt and conflict while the U.N. and powerful internationalists try to consolidate and retool our entire global economy.

There are approximately 196 “independent” countries throughout the world (I use independent carefully because it most definitely is up to debate) all of which like businesses compete for the nearly 7 billion residents of this planet.  Seems like a pretty small number of competitors right?  That is why many including myself have advocated “Let a 1000 nations bloom!”  If we can’t decentralize power within our own countries lets just create new ones.

Nietzche was right about one thing, his emphasis on secular man.  We are the only ones, not angels or aliens, who can and should be held responsible for our fate.  “Either we died because of our religion or our religion dies because of us” Nietzche proclaimed.

We are understandably insecure beings and the natural inclination, the path of least resistance, has always been to rely on superstition, God, the state, empire, supermen and even skepticism itself for consolation.  But if we must kill anything it is the predilection of consistent deference to central government, organized religion, ephemeral movements or ethereal beings.  There have only been a few instances in human history when we have chosen the difficult path, to respect each other’s unalienable rights and liberties.  In this world of bigger is better it may be best to remind ourselves small is beautiful.

LEFT: Anglo Saxon Freemen RIGHT: Ancient Israelites guided by God's pillar of fire
The ancient Israelis and Anglo-Saxons respected the fundamental unit of society – the individual.  Both cultures retained a constitution of sorts whether oral or ensconced in the Arc of the Covenant and both favored a decentralized familial organization of governance.  In fact Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin originally proposed the seal for the United States to honor these two rare civilizations:

The culture of a society is dictated by the individuals that make it up.  In a free society we are individually empowered to seek our own value system and through free association may enter or exit relationships with those who share a similar disposition or freely confront and debate those who do not.  When this model is reversed and ever-larger groups try to impose by force arbitrary relationships and values upon us calamity has been sure to follow.

Although the world has become smaller due to science’s technology it does not follow that there should be a larger worldwide government.  Contrary to what is claimed a one world government regardless of design will assuredly result in despotism.  The infrastructure needed to maintain a world government will beckon for a leader strong enough to wield the vast array of public policy tools and charismatic enough to ameliorate its disparate parts.  Such a leader is no doubt to arrive, but as history has shown us he will most likely not offer us more power over our own lives.  We know this because, in the words James Michner:

“A man can read 10,000 pages of history and find only the corruption of power and the defeat of hope.”

It was said that all politics is local, but our politics today are plagued by foreign policy, national politics and very little about events in our hometown or district.  Actions like the Repeal of 1913 or Seasteading will return power to the local level where it serves more intimately and efficiently and where it will ultimately empower free humanity to resist this new world order.  Historically while countries may fall to tyrants and cataclysm exodus was still possible, in a one world government there is nowhere to run.

The Spirit of 1776 in 2011

Happy 4th of July America!  We have so much to celebrate here in the land of the free and home of the brave don't we?  Then why does this 4th seem to ring a little hollow?  Sure, family and friends are abundant, fireworks large and small are anxiously awaiting a match, BBQs are being meticulously cleaned and loaded with charcoal, the red white and blue adorn every fixture, and libations await to conduct the entire affair.

America is 235 years old today, but what will the next 200 years bring?  The next 100?  If the last 10 years can provide us with a reasonable trajectory one could arguably predict a rough road ahead.  From a metastasizing national security apparatus and 4 foreign wars to an economy on life support and massive debt we find ourselves in a uniquely precarious situation.  This Independence Day may also ring especially hollow for over a quarter of Americans who can't quite put their finger on who we declared independence from, let alone for what reasons.

This may seem shocking to you, but it is true!  What is equally true is that most Americans have forgotten that our independence was not just from Great Britain, but from its oppressive government.  We fought a war, you know killing people with armies, in order to free ourselves from its tyrannical systems.  Let me be clear, King George III and his government were by no means herding our forbearers into concentration camps or enslaving colonists for work in hard labor, lack of representation and one too many taxes was all it took for us to start ending the lives of British soldiers.  This is representative of how greatly our forefathers cherished our inalienable rights and liberties and how little they would tolerate others trampling over them.

In the last 10 years we have seen exponential growth in government under both parties, Republicans and Democrats.  Our systems of governance have verifiably broken down under the "silent artillery of time", through the purposeful dismantling of constitutional safeguards, and the ensconcing of aberrant and unelected agencies (i.e. the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Federal Reserve, two inherently mischievous and unconstitutional bodies) amidst our free society.  This multitude of vulnerable governmental entities is incalculable enabling powerful interests to easily penetrate the halls of democracy and usurp regulatory posts via the hordes of private influence mercenaries known as lobbyists.

At every turn we pay through taxes to be searched, stopped, fondled, monitored, and categorized by these supposed departments of freedom.  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its loyal dog the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is the domestic equivalent of our foreign legions.  While our troops are away fighting unending warfare in numerous countries, known and unknown, the Pentagon has grown, here at home, a grossly self serving and powerful private intelligence and R&D community who's ultimate obsession is with the literal manufacture of not only weapons and war technology, but also the bogeymen to fight them with.

Meanwhile, our economy struggles.  It is laden with regulation, taxes, over 20% unemployment, and operated under the new paradigm of crony capitalism our government has been put in the position of picking the winners and losers instead of the objective and invisible hand of the free market.  Bad firms with their worse ideas and antiquated business models are kept afloat by the largesse of government intervention creating a tempestuous business environment where instead of investing money in growing brands and hiring new workers companies cautiously hoard cash and ship jobs overseas.

What will it take for today's Americans to rise up and say enough is enough?  According to our Founders they knew the tendency of most nations throughout history is to roll over and submit to tyranny and governmental overreach, but as far as our founders were concerned Americans are duty bound to abolish and reestablish a new and more free government!

"...Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." - Declaration of Independence

Aside from our charge as individuals to be vigilant in our mission of freedom, the Declaration of Independence is nonpareil in one important aspect, it was the first document ever referred to as a declaration of independence.  It is this singular document, this public example (not our armies), which over the last 235 years has recreated the world in our image, that is to say, has turned the world from a static amalgam of empires into a dynamic juxtapositional collage of independent nation states.  While nations have attempted to grow their power and influence by invading and/or attempting to control other countries through various vehicles causing much war and tumult this world of independents is still thankfully the status quo.  It however may not always be so.

The growing role of the United Nations threatens to throw America and the rest of the world back into the dark ages with regard to decentralized independent control of our nations and their peoples.  Regardless of the intoxicating prospects of perpetual peace envisaged by the UN's proponents it nonetheless is a superstructure with the incredible potential for apocalyptic failure.

Real peace is achieved through the free market of governments, the right of free humanity to emigrate to wherever they may find the most happiness.  The question this 4th of July is: is America still that destination and if we are not, how do we restore our Republic?

"[The Drug War] Cannot Be Won"

Drug War Has Failed And Governments Should Experiment With Legalizing Marijuana, Says Report

The global war on drugs has failed and governments should explore legalizing marijuana and other controlled substances, according to a commission that includes former heads of state, a former U.N. secretary-general and a business mogul.

A new report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy argues that the decades-old "global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world." The 24-page paper will be released Thursday.

"Political leaders and public figures should have the courage to articulate publicly what many of them acknowledge privately: that the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won," the report said.

The 19-member commission includes former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former U.S. official George P. Schultz, who held cabinet posts under U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon. Others include former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, former presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, writers Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa, U.K. business mogul Richard Branson and the current prime minister of Greece.

Instead of punishing users who the report says "do no harm to others," the commission argues that governments should end criminalization of drug use, experiment with legal models that would undermine organized crime syndicates and offer health and treatment services for drug-users in need.

The commission called for drug policies based on methods empirically proven to reduce crime, lead to better health and promote economic and social development.

The commission is especially critical of the United States, which its members say must lead changing its anti-drug policies from being guided by anti-crime approaches to ones rooted in healthcare and human rights.

"We hope this country (the U.S.) at least starts to think there are alternatives," former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria told The Associated Press by phone. "We don't see the U.S. evolving in a way that is complatible with our (countries') long-term interests."

The office of White House drug czar Gil Kerlikowske said the report was misguided. "Drug addiction is a disease that can be successfully prevented and treated. Making drugs more available – as this report suggests – will make it harder to keep our communities healthy and safe," Office of National Drug Control Policy spokesman Rafael Lemaitre said.
That office cites statistics showing declines in U.S. drug use compared to 30 years ago, along with a more recent 46 percent drop in current cocaine use among young adults over the last five years.

The report cited U.N. estimates that opiate use increased 34.5 percent worldwide and cocaine 27 percent from 1998 to 2008, while the use of cannabis, or marijuana, was up 8.5 percent.
